In the course of their twenty or so years of existence, Savatage has developed into one of the leading metal/hard rock bands around. Their earlier work is harder, more power-metal oriented, while the later albums have more of an accessible hard rock sound, with with slight progressive touches. In the earlier days the band had a very distinctive style, due mainly to the excellent guitar work of Criss Oliva (who, as most should know, was tragically killed in a a car accident in 1993) and the powerful vocals of brother Jon.
