The Hafen Nürnberg-Roth GmbH has great expectations for the development of container and combined loading traffic.
In order to build further on quality and attractiveness of the location, Hafen Nürnberg-Roth GmbH is planning the construction of a new trimodal cargo handling unit for combined loading traffic and partial expansion of the third port basin within the cargo traffic centre.

Due to excellent connections with the inter-regional road and rail networks, the cargo traffic centre of the Port of Nuremberg offers the best possible prerequisites for the operation of a trimodal cargo handling centre for containers and trailers.
A full container train has been making daily runs since 2000 between the cargo traffic centre of the Port of Nuremberg and the seaports of Bremen, Bremerhaven and Hamburg. A daily rail connection to the Port of Rotterdam was planned for the end of 2003. This traffic is organized and run by a private railway company. The cargo traffic centre of the Port of Nuremberg is already profiting from the liberalization of rail traffic and will be a part of the future positive trend by expanding its railway infrastructure and setting up new cargo handling facilities. The existing infrastructure for container transhipping consists of a port crane (double-link level luffing slewing crane with spreader) to handle containers of up to 40 tons, plus several mobile cranes.
ımplementing the planned trimodal cargo handling unit secures the growth potential for combined transhipping traffic in the Nuremberg region (Upper Bavaria). In addition, this unit will be integrated as a gateway into an expanded network of combined traffic facilities linking up south-eastern and southern Europe.

Transhipping of heavy cargo items

Nuremberg offers excellent conditions for the handling of cargo weighing up to 1,250 tons. The roll-on/roll-off unit set up in 1972 was the first for an inland port within Europe. It allows bulky, extra-long and especially heavy items to be loaded onto ships. The range of heavy and bulky items within the past 30 years primarily covers reactor parts, tanks, crane parts, melting furnaces, plant items for the chemical industry, very heavy machinery, floating dredgers and yachts, plus a large number of extra-large transformers.


Transhipping / storage facilities

The port was planned and built such that transport and transhipping are functionally separated from the warehousing and distribution side.

Companies that primarily use road or rail transport and are less dependent on access to a waterway are located in the western part of the port area. The comprehensive facilities of the port railway system include, for example, its own marshalling yard with electric points switching.
The shipping companies and ship-based cargo handling operations are located in the eastern part of the port. Depending on their requirements, production companies are located either on the cargo handling wharves or in the area at the edge of the port. The spatial separation of companies working in different fields has a number of advantages:
§ ideal sizing of the plots of land
§ no restrictions on the handling of bulk goods
§ lower costs for the use of the cargo handling facilities
§ neighbourly cooperation between companies of the
same type
§ optimized marshalling services by the railway.
This concentrated form of usage means that the facilities of the port are used intensively and thus the costs for the companies located there are minimized. Hafen Nürnberg-Roth GmbH rents out the cargo handling facilities together with crane drivers to the cargo handling companies. The ability to concentrate several cranes at one point means that peaks in cargo handling can be covered to a high degree. And with minimal investment costs. This form of operation has proved its worth to the full: cargo handling is fast and reasonably priced.

The range of cargo handled within the port of Nuremberg ranges from bulk goods such as coal, ores, scrap metal, cement, scrap paper, wood, grain, gravel, animal feed and fertilizers up to high-value individual items such as transformers and industrial plant units. In addition, there are all kinds of consumer goods and petroleum products. Among others, there are 11 full gantry level luffing slewing cranes with a lifting capacity of up to 40 tons to allow the rapid handling of bulk cargo.

Real estate

The cargo traffic centre forms the transport link between production and consumption. Locations in the port therefore have special advantages. For example, through the availability of industrial, commercial and logistics areas, and also of labour and complementary services. This is one of the deciding factors for industrial and commercial companies that have set up here. In the 30 years since it was set up, the Port of Nuremberg has developed into one of the biggest multifunctional logistics and distribution centres in south Germany with a comprehensive range of services available round the clock.

On an area of 337 hectares we currently have plots ranging in size between 5,000 und 100,000 m² available for rental and use.
